SOCAR still interested to build carbamide plant in Georgia

Despite the construction of a carbamide plant in Azerbaijan, the issue of building a carbamide plant in Georgia hasn’t been removed from the agenda, said the plant’s director Khayal Jafarov.

He made the remarks at the ‘The 2nd SOCAR International Caspian and Central Asia Downstream Forum – Trading, Logistics, Refining, Petrochemicals’, in Baku on Apr. 27.

“We are still interested in this project and we will consider this issue,” noted Jafarov.

The price of gas is very important in the carbamide production, he said.

“There were certain agreements on the price of gas, and later it turned out that the negotiations were suspended. At this stage, we have postponed this project from our side, but we would be interested in building a similar plant in Georgia,” noted Jafarov. “We already have such experience.”

Net cost of SOCAR’s project on carbamide plant construction in Azerbaijan is about 498 million euros. The work on the plant’s construction was completed by 94.8 percent. It is planned to start the commissioning work at the plant by the end of 2017.

The plant will produce 650,000-660,000 tons of carbamide per year. It is planned to supply a quarter of production, that is, 150,000-200,000 tons of carbamide, to the Azerbaijani domestic market, said Jafarov, adding that the remaining part will be exported to Turkey, Georgia and the markets of the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea countries.
